Attorneys from other geographical areas often consider referrals of complex client problems arising in Alamance County to a local law firm. They may desire some substantiation of our motto, “We are in it for the long haul.” Our appellate record confirms our motto. In thirty five years of handling appeals to the N.C. Court of Appeals and N.C. Supreme court, attorney Clay Hemric, Jr. has lost one appeal which was a slip and fall case on a motel stairway. Other than that, he has not lost an appeal during that time.
Mr. Hemric has successfully handled hundreds of automobile, truck, and motorcycle injury cases, premises liability matters, and wrongful death cases and has many verdicts that were not appealed by the defense. Of course, his prior success is not an indicator of what could, would, or might happen with any case in the future. Success in any case depends on the merits of the individual case, and many other factors, many of which are beyond control. Many North Carolina cases are now resolved through alternative dispute resolution (ADR), including mediation. To better understand mediation, attorney Clay Hemric, Jr. became a Certified Superior Court Mediator approximately 10 years ago. He has served as a mediator in many cases. This experience helps him to understand the mediation process and how to achieve a successful result in the ever-increasing number of cases resolved through mediation. All civil and criminal cases are complex, especially in North Carolina, which is one of only three states in America with contributory negligence. It is never fun or relaxing for a client or attorney in a courtroom waiting for a knock on the door signaling a jury verdict. Unlike others, we have been there hundreds of times. We feel we know as well as anyone what proof and persuasion jurors want to see and hear and what evidence they won’t tolerate. When we say, “We are in it for the long haul,” we mean it.
