Mr. Hemric has had a lifelong interest in Boy Scouting. He received his Eagle Scout Award in 1959 and has been a lifelong member of the Order of the Arrow. He played varsity tennis for Wake Forest in the late 60's and was elected President of the Wake Forest University College Union. He was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Honorary Leadership Fraternity.

After finishing several years of law school, Mr. Hemric was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in November, 1969. He served approximately four years in the Marine Corps Reserves, finishing up as a First Lieutenant.

His  accomplishments in the legal field led to his being recognized by Business North Carolina Magazine in 2006 as a member of Legal Elite.  He has been chosen by SuperLawyers magazine to be a member of SuperLawyers 2010.

Local racing fans may remember his participation in stockcar racing. He drove the #66 Dodge, the #67 Chevrolet, and the #3 Chevrolet at Ace Speedway in Alamance County, North Carolina for many years while it was a dirt track and asphalt track. He also drove at the 311 Speedway in Madison, North Carolina. That track is known locally as The Daytona of Dirt.

Mr. Hemric has been an avid backpacker since he became the Scoutmaster of Troop 9 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Burlington, North Carolina in 1986. He continued as the Scoutmaster there until 2005 and had a hand in helping forty young men to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout during his tenure.

He has been active in the sport of soaring since many years ago and is an avid bicyclist. He is a former marathon runner and tri-athlete. He currently divides his time between Alamance County and a home that he and his wife own in the historic section of Charleston, South Carolina.

He learned Spanish through two years of classes at the Alamance Community College, beginning his study in the year 2000 and continuing with a tutor after his class work. He has helped to translate "Woman and the Law" from English to Spanish for Hispanic women in North Carolina. This booklet was published by the University of North Carolina Law School. He served as the Chairman of the Litigation Section for the North Carolina Bar Association in 1988 and 1999. He served as the editor of the True Bill for the North Carolina Bar Association Criminal Justice Section in 1998. He has been Board Certified as a Specialist in Criminal Law since 1994.
